Organic Food Certification

There are currently no laws to protect the use of the word ‘organic’.  Consumers can only be guaranteed that a product is organic if it has recognised organic certification.  Certification provides regulated processes to assure consumers that strict guidelines have been adhered to.  Certified organic or biodynamic products are produced with land management practices that prohibit use of artificial fertilisers, herbicides, pesticides, growth regulators, antibiotics, hormone stimulants or intensive livestock systems.

There are a number of organic certifiers in Australia.  These bodies are accredited and audited annually by the Australian Quarantine Inspection Service (AQIS).  Organic producers are able to choose the certifiers they wish to use.  We as consumers need to check for certification on products to ensure that what we are purchasing is really organic.  Below is a list of the national independent certification bodies.
